Madeline Frank named women’s basketball SUNYAC Scholar Athlete of the Year

Senior Madeline Frank selected as SUNYAC Scholar Athlete of the Year for women’s basketball

SUNY Oneonta senior Madeline Frank has earned the SUNYAC Scholar Athlete of the Year award for women’s basketball. The award is the latest honor for Frank who completed a brilliant four-year career with the women’s program. Frank was the lone Oneonta selection from amongst the seven winners chosen from the other winter conference sports.

“Maddy is a tremendous Student Athlete,” stated Head Women’s Basketball Coach Daphne Thompson. “She has great focus and drive to win in both arenas and has been a great example to others of what it takes to succeed! I am proud of all that she has accomplished as a player in our program both on and off the court. I look forward to seeing what she will accomplish in the future!”

Last month, Frank earned selection to the Google Cloud Academic All-District 3 first team for basketball as chosen by CoSIDA. District 3 is made up of all the colleges in the state of New York and each athlete is nominated by their respective Sports Information Offices who are members of CoSIDA.

Frank was selected to the All-Conference Third Team for a second consecutive year this winter. She led the team in rebounding collecting 218 and was second on the team in points with 249 for an average of 9.6 points per contest. She recorded five double-doubles with a high of 18 points versus Williams College on Nov. 17th while posting a season high 14 boards against Plattsburgh on Feb. 15th.

Frank finishes her career with 785 points to go with her 776 rebounds. Her rebounds are the all-time record surpassing the old mark of 720 held by two players. She was a career 72 percent shooter from the free throw line and recorded 145 assists and 87 steals.

As a biology major, Frank has earned numerous academic accolades including induction into Chi Alpha Sigma National College Athlete Honor Society while being the recipient of the Susan Sutton Smith Award. She is a Provost’s List student and is a member of Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society.

On campus, Frank has earned Silver Level status in the College’s Leadership Academy. She is a certified EMT and is a member of the Oneonta Emergency Squad.

The Red Dragons finished the season with an overall record of 20-6 while qualifying for the SUNYAC tournament.

About the SUNYAC Scholar Athlete of the Year Award

The nominating criteria for the Award is:

3.30 grade point average through fall semester

Academic and athletic excellence

Must be a starter or significant reserve

Must be at least a sophomore

Transfers must have completed one full year (two full regular-session semesters) prior to Nomination

 

One student athlete per SUNYAC sponsored sport are nominated by their respective Sports Information Director at the conclusion of the fall, winter and spring season. After the nominations are compiled, the ten school’s Sports Information Directors then vote using a weighted 3-2-1 system. Winners are announced in January (fall), April (winter) and June (spring).
