Grand Slam event to determine poetry team Nov. 14

Join us for Grand Slam XVIII on November 14 at 8 p.m. in the Waterfront Room at Hunt Union.

There will be 12 poets and two rounds. Five of these student poets will earn their way as members of the SUNY Oneonta Poetry Slam Team and will compete at the ACUI international college poetry slam tournament hosted by the University of Houston in April 2019: Gabe Membreno, Reed Guy, Phylesia Lewis, Malack Alharaizeh, Rippan Kaur, Zanida Banks-Rollins, Katie Hebert, Spencer Potter, Cassandra Williams, Gwyn Quagliana, Sydney Strano, and Dalina Luc.

Roger W. Hecht publishes article

Roger W. Hecht (English) had an article published in Broadening Critical Boundaries in Children’s and Young Adult Literature and Culture, published by Cambridge Scholars Press. His article, “‘To See with Eyes Unclouded by Hate:’ Environmental Ethics and the Art of Seeing in the Films of Hayao Miyazaki,” examines how the famed animated film director develops an “environmental gaze” in his films as a major tool toward cultivating an environmental ethic in his audiences.

Professional Development

–          Dignity for All Students ACT (DASA) Training
Who needs to complete DASA training? Anyone applying for NYS teacher certification after December 31, 2013, must complete six hours of DASA training which is comprised of school professionals including but not limited to: teachers, paraprofessionals, counselors, psychologists, social workers, and coaches.

College Camp to celebrate Native American Heritage Month with stories and music

Celebrate National Native American Heritage Month at the SUNY Oneonta College Camp on Saturday, Nov. 17 with “Native American Stories, Music &  Drumming.”

Beginning at 2 p.m., Chief Roger Longtoe Sheehan and elder JT Taylor of the El Nu Abenaki tribe will share their culture and perspective through traditional stories, music and drumming. This family-friendly event is free and open to all. Light refreshments will be available, so please join us by the warmth of the fire for this unique afternoon event.
