On Oct. 9, 450 8th grade students from 15 area schools gathered for “Career and College Destinations,” a day of college and career exploration. The Catskill Area School Study Council and DCMO BOCES led the initiative and were proud to partner with multiple departments on the SUNY Oneonta campus to bring this event to life, including Anna Legname of the Career Development Center, Doug Reilly of the A.J. Read Science Discovery Center and Admissions.
The program began at the Foothills Performing Arts Center with a morning filled with career preparation adventures including an interest assessment led by Anna Legname from the Career Development Center and breakout sessions with local employers. The program culminated at the SUNY Oneonta Campus where students received a warm welcome and an early introduction to the “College Experience.”
CASSC hopes this program will strengthen the relationships between the college and our local communities. Building early career and college awareness in students from our rural area through interactive programming opens the door to possibilities!
We could not have offered such a robust program without individual faculty members volunteering their time during fall break. In addition to the organizations named above we would like to thank: Dr. Sallie Han, Cultural Anthropology, Dr. Tracy Betsinger, Biological Anthropology, Clara Tanner, Graduate Student, School Counseling program/ Career Development, Pamela Hilton, Associate Director of Undergraduate Admissions, Eric Scheer, Admissions Counselor, Dr. Nicole Waid, Secondary Education, Social Studies and Educational Technology, Dr. Lee Graham, Secondary Education and Educational Technology, Dr. Jiang Tan, Secondary Education and Educational Technology and David Geasey, Director of Communication and Media Technologies and Engineering.
