Student art exhibition to celebrate black beauty

Student Exhibition:  The Blacker the Berry by Bertram Knight will be on exhibit in SUNY Oneonta’s Martin-Mullen Art Gallery Annex from October 18 to November 10. A gallery reception will be held October 18 from 5 to 7 p.m.

The Blacker the Berry is a photographic display of large scale photographs in celebration of black beautyAbout the exhibition Knight states:My work is here to assure those who have questioned themselves. My work is here to enlighten those who have been lied to. My work is here to challenge the misconceptions that have gained popularity. My work is here to remind the community that black is beautiful. Wide noses and thick lips are beautiful. Nappy hair and big Afros are beautiful. Black skin is beautiful. The imperfections we desperately try to correct are the most beautiful aspects of who we are. We must appreciate the natural attributes we have been blessed with. We must love and treasure our blackness.”

The Martin-Mullen Art Gallery and Project Gallery are free and open to the public from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m., Monday-Friday when the college is in session and during special events.  For more information about the gallery or upcoming exhibitions, contact Gallery Director, Tim Sheesley at (607)436-2445, (607)436-3456 or visit
