SUNY Oneonta’s Oneonta Fights Cancer Club will hold its first-ever OH Fight Walk on Friday, April 13, at the Alumni Field House in order to help support the local fight against cancer.
The entire community is invited to the event, which will take place from 6 p.m. until midnight and will feature activities, food and music. Participants will walk around the Field House to raise awareness of and money for local families battling cancer. Entry costs $15 at the door or $10 for early registration.
The OH Fight Walk is replacing the college’s annual Relay for Life event because The American Cancer Society, which runs Relay for Life, was unable to provide support for the campus’ efforts this year due to staff cuts.
“Our campus has been holding successful Relays for nine years and it’s something the student body looks forward to,” said organizer Linda Drake, executive director for SUNY Oneonta’s Center for Social Responsibility and Community and adviser to the Oneonta Fights Cancer Club. “We still wanted to make a difference. Our club decided that we would give all of our proceeds to three local families affected by cancer. This is a community event!”
Drake said she is hoping to raise at least $10,000. Funds raised will be split evenly between three local individuals who have been affected by cancer – longtime SUNY Oneonta employee Laura Emmett, who is on leave during her recovery; 17-year-old Mariano Hernandez, a star football player at Oneonta High School who is taking time off for treatment; and Oneonta resident Donald Pidgeon, a former employee of Hampshire House Adult Home who can no longer work due to his recovery.
Activities throughout the night will include giant Jenga and checkers, Guitar Hero, a toilet paper mummy-wrapping contest, and much more. There will be fundraising tables around the Field House, so attendees should bring small bills and change to donate. There will also be live music and a DJ during the event.
