SUNY Oneonta’s art galleries will feature two new student exhibits, beginning this week. The first is “desensitized” by Emily Beck and Lesley-Ann Dries. The exhibit will run from Feb. 15 to March 2 at the Project Space Gallery in the Fine Arts Center, with a public reception for the artists Thursday, Feb. 15, at 5 p.m.
In “desensitized,” both students explore the personal feelings of difficult situations and experiences as revealed in black and white photographs of portraits by Beck and houses by Dries. Both artists included text with the images to communicate their message.
The second exhibit, “DAY DREAM” by Chumin Wu and Xiaoyi Zeng, will run from Feb. 15 to March 2 in the Martin-Mullen Annex (lobby area) in the Fine Arts Center. There will be a public reception for the artists Friday, Feb. 16 at 5 p.m.
“DAY DREAM” features digitally manipulated photographs by Wu and Zeng. This is a true collaboration by these two students. Wu contributed black and white digital photographs of urban situations, and Zeng offered digital color graphic images of humor and whimsy to add to the “Day Dream” experience of common everyday situations.
Our campus has been chosen to host the SUNY Undergraduate Research Conference (SURC) on Friday, April 20, 2018. SURC brings together hundreds of undergraduate students and faculty mentors from across the SUNY system for student presentations (poster sessions, oral presentations, performances, visual art, etc.) and professional development opportunities for students and faculty.
Students interested in presenting at SURC 2018 must submit abstracts online by Monday, Feb. 19 (this is a firm deadline) and will be notified of acceptance by March 9. The deadline to register for the conference is March 19. The registration fee for student presenters will be paid through a generous grant from the Oneonta Auxiliary Services (OAS) Student Development and Campus Enhancement Endowment. The registration fee for named faculty mentors of presenting students will also be paid through other campus funding sources.
Non-presenting SUNY Oneonta students and faculty are welcome to attend all presentation sessions at SURC on April 20 without officially registering. However, those who wish to attend the SURC luncheon and Keynote Address by SUNY Chancellor Kristina M. Johnson must register and pay the registration fee. (The Chancellor’s address will be streamed for real-time viewing in IRC #1 without registering.)
Please note that there will be no SUNY Oneonta Student Research & Creative Activity (SRCA) Day in 2018. SURC is THE opportunity for our undergraduate students to present projects to the campus and greater community in 2018.
