The UUP Labor Film Series will present the movie “Pride” on Tuesday, Feb. 20 at 7 p.m. at 104 Morris Conference Center. Dr. Matthew Hendley, History Department, will introduce the film with a talk on the history of gay and lesbian rights in the UK.
“Pride,” notes Dr. Hendley, “is based on a true story of an alliance between London-based gay and lesbian activists who went to a village rural Wales to support the striking coal miners during the 1984 Miner’s Strike in Thatcher’s Britain. Needless to say, there is initially a bit of a culture clash between the two groups but in time they learn to appreciate one another and find solidarity. The film has some heart, good humor and an excellent story.”
This event is sponsored by UUP, departments of History, Women’s & Gender Studies, and Africana & Latino Studies, and the Gender & Sexuality Resource Center. The event is free, and all members of the SUNY Oneonta community are welcome. For more information, contact Dr. William Simons, William.Simons@oneonta.edu
