Tim Newton Conducts Albany Area All-State High School Chorus

On November 17-18, Tim Newton conducted the New York State School Music Association Zone 7 Area All-State High School Chorus, of 170 of the Capital Region’s best high school singers, representing more than 40 school districts. Newton led the chorus in eight hours of rehearsal and performed choral music from Mozambique, Zambia, Latvia, England and the US. Featured works included Jonathan Dove’s double chorus work, Ring Out, Wild Bells, and Eriks Esenvald’s Northern Lights that employs hand chimes and water glasses, a soloist, and an eight-part chorus. This was Tim’s third NYSSMA Area All-State High School Choral invitation, and was held at Saratoga Springs High School.

Associate Professor Tim Newton Appointed a Deputy Chorus Master of Philharmonia Chorus, London, in Fall 2017

Tim Newton, Associate Professor of Music, was appointed Deputy Chorus Master of London’s Philharmonia Chorus in August 2017. Upon the sudden indisposition of Berlin Chorus Master, Stefan Bevier, Newton rehearsed the Chorus in final rehearsals for two programs at Germany’s Rheingau Music Festival: a concert of thirteen English Romantic cathedral anthems at Wiesbaden’s Marktkirche on August 31, recorded by Deutschlandfunk for broadcast this fall; the concluding concert of the Festival on September 2 with the Hamburg Symphony performing Edward Elgar’s oratorio, The Dream of Gerontius, conducted by Deutsche Grammophon artist Paul McCreesh at the 12th-century Kloster Eberbach. Newton also formed and rehearsed a chamber chorus of 20 London professional voices that were featured in both concerts. With Maestro Bevier’s recovery, Newton ultimately served as Assistant Chorus Master during the Festival, and sang with the Chorus in both performances. The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung hailed the Chorus as “Stars of the Evening” after the sold-out concluding performance.

On November 5th, Newton returned to London to deputize and perform with the Philharmonia Chorus for their 60th Anniversary Concert in a performance of William Walton’s epic Belshazzar’s Feast with the Philharmonia Orchestra conducted by Edward Gardiner (English National Opera and Bergen Symphony, Norway). The concert, recorded for broadcast on BBC Radio 3 on November 28th, may be accessed at this link until the end of December: The Philharmonia Chorus consists of approximately 100 highly trained amateurs, music conservatory, and professional opera singers in London, with a roster of nearly 200 singers.
