Information Session for Student Grant Program – Wednesday, October 18

The application deadline for the fall 2017 round of the Student Grant Program for Research and Creative Activity (CA) is Wednesday, November 15. Need guidance or have questions? Members of the Committee on Research are offering a Student Research/CA Grant Information Session on Wednesday, October 18, from 5–6:30 p.m. in Hunt Union’s Butternut Valley Room. The student grant program now offers different tracks for all levels of interested students and potential faculty mentors. Stop by and find out more about support for student research and creative activity.

Optional Retirement Program (ORP) Enrollees – Changes to Choosing Investment Providers

Recently all NYS employees were sent a letter from SUNY University-Wide Benefits Administration regarding the implementation of a new on-line retirement management system, Retirement@Work, that is schedule to be implemented effective November 3, 2017. To choose/change investment providers in the ORP, all enrollees will be required to access Retirement@Work online.

To transition to this new system, a “black out” period has been scheduled. If you wish to change your ORP investment provider(s), you may do so after, November 3, 2017, at which time you will be able to register and access Retirement@Work by going to retirementatwork.org/suny

State Employees – Changes to Enrollment and Management of 403b Voluntary Retirement Savings Accounts

Recently all NYS employees were sent a letter from SUNY University-Wide Benefits Administration regarding the implementation of a new on-line retirement management system, Retirement@Work, that is schedule to be implemented effective November 3, 2017. To enroll, choose investment providers, and designate amount of payroll deductions, all employees will be required to access Retirement@Work online. No paper forms will be accepted.

To transition from paper-based system to online system, a “black out” period has been scheduled from October 25, 2017 to November 03, 2017. As a result, October 20, 2017 is the last day Human Resources can accept a paper Salary Reduction Agreement to enter/change an employee’s 403b payroll deduction.

This new SUNY on-line process will NOT impact an employee’s ability to enroll or make changes to their NYS Deferred Compensation Plan (457b).

After November 3, 2017, employees will be able to register and access Retirement@Work by going to retirementatwork.org/suny.

CONVIVIUM LUNCHEON AND PROGRAM – Thursday, November 2, 2017

You are cordially invited to luncheon with the Oneonta Faculty Convivium on Thursday, November 2, noon to 1:00 p.m., in Le Café, Morris. Dr. Karen Stewart, Assistant Professor of Communication & Media, will present a talk titled, “Follow Me into the World of Video Games, Applied Pedagogies, and Arts-Based Learning.” Abstract: Video games are more than entertainment. In addition to being fun, they represent new ways of learning, sharing information, and facilitating creative expression. As such, video games offer rich and exciting connections to applied pedagogies and arts-based learning. In this talk, Dr. Stewart shares how she accidently became a video game scholar, and how her research into visual novel video games is turning into a dynamic applied learning project that is attracting students from a variety of disciplines across campus. She also discusses different ways gaming can be a conceptual framework for creating a non-traditional learning environment.

Targeted Tuition for Welding

The NYS & CSEA Partnership for Education and Training is pleased to announce the continuation of the targeted tuition program for Welding. This program provides tuition assistance to CSEA-represented NYS OSU and DMNA employees who wish to take welding courses. Eligible employees can receive two targeted tuition benefits (vouchers or reimbursements). Each targeted benefit can provide tuition assistance for one non-credit welding course up to $1,140 or one credit-bearing welding course, up to a maximum of four credits at the resident tuition per credit rate, not to exceed $285 per credit. Applications must be received by March 31, 2018 and courses must be in session sometime between April 1, 2017 and March 31, 2018.

MYSTIC BLACK: The Essential Nature” by Ruben Salinas

Project Space Gallery October 16 – November 21, 2017.
Public reception: Thursday, October 19, 5-7PM with Artist Gallery Talk at 6PM

Ruben Salinas, SUNY Oneonta Assistant Professor of Illustration, will exhibit over twenty paintings produced by using black liquid tempera and acrylic on paper and canvas. Some in combination with large scale ink jet printing, 30” to 40”x 60”.
Salinas joined the faculty at Oneonta in 2016. He has had an extensive career in the arts. Ruben received his MFA from Stephen F Austin State University, and his BA in Communications from Universidad Regiomontana in Monterrey, Mexico.

Ruben’s works include book and poster illustrations, editorial illustration, storyboards for TV commercials, and fashion illustration. He is the author of the book The Spirit of Gesture. Ruben’s paintings have been exhibited throughout different galleries in the US and Japan. His work with digital prints explore the vast possibilities of black and white image making through regular and large format Giclee printing.
