On April 21, at 1:00 in Morris Hall Craven Lounge, the faculty center will hold the first Great Ideas Meet Up (GIMU). GIMUs are short group sessions that allow faculty to hear a variety of best practices in a short time window. These are held in a large room with small stations. Each station has one lead faculty member sharing one fabulous idea for a brief informal chat with three to four faculty as participants. Each chat is 15 minutes long and is participatory in that the “presenter” shares the great idea and then engages the “audience” in a chat about how the idea is implemented. After 15 minutes, a chime or other indicator will sound to ask people to select a new table. The participants can move to any table. There is no set pattern and participants do not need to visit every table. The event will last approximately 75 minutes. There is no need to RSVP. We hope to see you there!
Are you thinking about developing a new course or new unit in an existing course? How about incorporating environmental or sustainability issues? We believe this can be done with virtually any course! We invite you to enhance your teaching and engagement by participating in the Sustainable Susquehanna Workshop, May 17-18, 2017.
This pilot project, based on nationally recognized models known for their innovative approach to curricular change, is designed to be an intellectually stimulating and collegial experience for teaching faculty at SUNY-Oneonta. The workshop will explore how we can meaningfully integrate sustainability – broadly defined – into our classrooms. Though we start by taking a close look at SUNY-Oneonta and Otsego County, we invite participants to engage in local/global comparisons. Campus faculty who have received training from the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) will facilitate and catalyze discussion of a green curriculum and its integration and role in the broader community. Participants will receive an honorarium of $1000 upon completion of a new or revised syllabus (with the intent to teach the course by the fall semester of 2018 or sooner). Participants will also join in a fieldtrip and discussions that will offer opportunities to extend research and teaching horizons across disciplines and create new networks with fellow colleagues.

The Faculty Center invites you to consider serving as a mentor for a new faculty hired for the coming fall. Mentors make a difference in the quality of experience for new faculty and your professional service as a mentor is valued at SUNY Oneonta. Faculty selected to mentor for the coming academic year will receive a $200.00 professional development credit for both their service as a mentor and for attending the mentor preparation meeting. This two hour training will be held in early August. Mentors will be invited to Orientation for new faculty the week prior to the start of classes to meet their mentee in person. There will also be a brief check in meeting for mentors at the end of the fall semester. In addition to the credit, mentors will receive a gift card of $25 for either Starbucks or Seasons. This card is for you to take your mentee out for coffee throughout the semester. Mentors must be employed as full-time, tenured or tenure track faculty (with at least two contract renewal cycles completed) and be willing to serve for the entire academic year. It is expected that the mentors will engage in informal meetings on or off campus with the mentee at least three times each semester and will provide on-going communication as needed through either email or phone.
