Heather Beach, Milne Library, presented a poster at the Opening Doors to Collaboration, Outreach, and Diversity Rare Books and Manuscripts Section Conference in Coral Gables, Florida on June 23, 2016.
The poster, entitled “How Textbooks of the Past are Opening Doors for the Students of Today,” explores how the math section of the Alden Room’s Early American Textbook Collection has been used for research by students in MATH 301: Introduction to the History of Mathematics class. Many of the early textbooks are original to the College when it began as the Oneonta Normal School. The Alden Room also holds a number of math-related treasures in the Archives. Student interest and collaboration with Dr. Toke Knudsen have inspired sixteen students to delve into some of these treasures to complete ten different independent studies projects over the past five years under Dr. Knudsen’s direction.
