Shiao-Yun Chiang (Communication, School of Social Sciences) participated in a one-day roundtable discussion at the annual convention of International Communication Association on June 9, 2016 in Fukuoka, Japan. The theme of this roundtable discussion is the negotiation of institutional authority as reflected in the event that happened in the courthouse of Rowan, Kentucky on September 1, 2015 when the county Clerk Kim Davis refused to issue marriage licenses to homosexual couples in defiance of the Supreme Court decision. Over 30 international scholars analyzed this event from different approaches. Chiang presented a socio-cognitive approach to the analysis of the interaction between Kim Davis and the homosexual couple, David Ermold and David Moore. Special thanks go to the departmental chair and the Dean of the School of Social Sciences for their support!
