CONGRATULATIONS to five Physics and 3-2 Engineering students: Bridget Boland, Erica Corbin, Bridget Chartrand, Kimmy Kushman and Lyteshia Price, who presented a poster about their outreach activities this semester at the spring 2016 meeting of the NY Section of the American Physical Society at Sarah Lawrence College in Yonkers, NY on April 1, 2016. Their poster won the second place award in the Undergraduate Physics Poster Competition at this meeting.
This team of students have visited several middle schools across upstate New York. The project is designed to spark an interest in physics and engineering fields, especially among female and minority students. The “make and take” activities from the program are a powerful way to spark that interest. Moreover, having an all-female team is a proven role model approach. This activity was funded by a grant from the New York State Section of the American Physical Society. Professor Sunil Labroo served as the faculty mentor for the Oneonta team.
The seventh annual New Critics Conference will take place on Saturday, April 9, at Morris Conference Center. Student panels will run from 10-3:00 and will be followed by Prof. Jinny Huh’s (University of Vermont) keynote address at 3:30. Dr. Huh’s talk, entitled, “Arresting Eyes: Race Detection in a Post-Racial America” will look at the efforts to detect race in detective novels and passing narratives. Further, Dr. Huh will ask what it means to try to detect race in “post-racial” America where we are often instructed not to see race.
Conference panels and the keynote are free and open to all, and light refreshments will be provided at the keynote. Please see the attached conference schedule and keynote poster, or contact Bianca Tredennick for more information.
